Tire treads are made from a mixture of rubber compounds that are extremely resistant to abrasion wear.  Modern automotive tires contain two layers of tread materials.  The first tread layer is designed to provide cool operation, minimal rolling resistance, and strength.  The outer layer, or tread, is designed for long life and maximal traction.  Tread rubber is a blend of many different synthetic and natural rubbers. Tire manufacturers may use up to thirty different types of synthetic rubber and eight types of natural rubber in their tires.
