What do the letters and numbers mean? The P stands for passenger car tire.  The 215 number is the width of the tire in millimeters.  The 65 number is the ratio of height to width, which is also referred to as the aspect ratio.  This particular tire would have a height that is 65 percent of the width.  The R refers to radial, and the 15 is the rim diameter in inches.
